Further, an 8mm round will also chamber and allow the bolt to lock up but, again, as 7mm is just a necked down 8mm that isn't 'proof' enough for me to consider firing an 8mm from it until I know more. Since 7mm Mauser is just a necked-down 8mm cartridge, I figure a 7mm would chamber/lock up and fire but as the bullet wouldn't really engage the rifling that might explain the complete lack of accuracy. After that, I have been thinking it is actually an 8mm. 22WMR out of my Rough Rider off-hand at 100 yards. The guy at the pawnshop told mom when she bought it all those years ago (either before I was born or shortly after) that it was a 7mm Mauser and so that is what dad shot out of it when and if he shot it (I actually don't recall ever having seen him shoot this rifle.) I tried it at an outdoor range one day with a poster board sized target at 25 yards and the spread could be measured in feet! I got less spread shooting. Now, let me say that the front sight is a bit loose but that isn't the reason for the level of inaccuracy. He never shot it, much and bemoaned its total lack of accuracy. Mom says she bought it for him at a pawnshop after all of his guns were stolen many years ago. I have a Mauser type rifle that belonged to my dad.
